Students from the Greenville Woodworkers Guild met once a week from October 2016 to April 2017 building this handmade boat. Students also made several specialized tools including clamps to hold the planks together and jigs specific to this type of boat building. On Thursday, April 13 students from the Greenville Woodworkers Guild launched the canoe on the Reedy River. Following the launch, students donated the canoe to Friends of the Reedy River.
This fiddlehead canoe, designed by Harry Bryan, is 10.5' long and was built in the traditional "lapstrake" method in which one plank overlaps the next and both are fastened together with handmade rivets. The canoe is made from cypress planks over white oak frames and the deck is cherry. The design dates back to Native American river canoes. English explorers liked the shape and function then took the style back to England where they added a deck to keep the cold English water from splashing in the boat. Harry Bryan is a Canadian designer that further adapted the design.
